The Heater is ZiaVelo's weekly Wednesday worlds — a full-on race-paced, race-tactics affair that pulls no punches. If the name didn't tip you off, the "DROP ride!" warning should: this one's for riders who want to be pushed, not shepherded.
Departure is from Spotted Dog Brewery in Old Mesilla, a genuinely excellent place to start (and, presumably, to decompress after). Las Cruces roads from here stretch out into the Mesilla Valley with the Organ Mountains looming to the east — flat enough to go fast, exposed enough to hurt when the wind's up.
The ride runs every Wednesday throughout Daylight Saving Time, with start times that shift to keep you chasing the last of the usable light: 5PM in March, 6PM through the long summer days, and 5:30PM once Labor Day rolls around. A recurring beatdown with a built-in seasonal rhythm — and a cold beer waiting at the end of it.
